100 Chairs in 100 Days: Gamper Martino

Gamper Martino challenged himself to create 100 chairs in 100 days from reclaimed and discarded furniture. He has come up with some superbly inventive shapes! It all seems very typographic to me... how many ways can you draw the letter A? How many ways can you assemble a chair? If you take legibility / practicality out of the equation, then your results can be endless.

Martino has an abiding interest in the psycho-social aspects of furniture design, in particular, he has a love of corners and the multiple emotions provoked by the single right angled boundary. Alongside this concern with underused spaces, Gamper also nurtures an interest in unwanted objects. Reworking furniture that has been dumped on the streets, he has created a mismatched family of objects.

Behind each of Gamper’s pieces, there is a story, one that involves materials, techniques, people and places. The finished product is a token of all that. It is the lovely looking thing that sits in the brief interlude between making and using.

I saw these chairs last year at the Design Museum in London. It was amazing to see Gamper's work contrasted with the Design Museum's chair collection of design classics. You could actually sit on many of these chairs--so unlike most museums--which really gave a visceral experience to the work.
