Nightmares
October 18 - November 2According to German folklore, nightmares are the work of demons —
small beasts called 'incubi' that sit on the chests of sleepers and
cast a spell of dread over them in the night. Sleep experts link distressing dreams to high fever, unusual diet,
psychological stress, intoxication, and the habit of sleeping on the
left side. The causes of nightmares remain mysterious but the human experience of them is universal: disturbing dreams that tell strange, sometimes absurd and frequently scary stories of the self.
This October UPPERCASE gallery will explore the symbolic, aesthetic and acoustic landscape of Nightmares in a multi-media art exhibition (October 18 - November 2).
A host of local and international visual artists have mined the deeper recesses of their personal nightmare experiences, memories and associations to help us probe this theme in all its unsettling horror. The show will represent dark dreams across a myriad of forms and artistic practices, including: illustration, painting, photography, sculpture and animation.
Nightmares promises to thrill and chill with its startling showcase of strange happenings, spooky scenarios, odd images and haunting soundscapes. A visit to UPPERCASE gallery is essential inspiration for the haunting Halloween season.
